Everything You Need to Know about Weed Wax

Weed wax is wildly popular and is touted as the world’s tastiest marijuana concentrate In modern times, weed lovers can choose from a wide array of smoking methods that go above and beyond the traditional dry bud. As laws surrounding cannabis are relaxed around the world, techniques used to prepare other natural products (such as coffee) are now making an appearance in the marijuana scene. Over the last decade, weed wax has risen in popularity around the globe, but what is it exactly and how is it made?

To cut a very long story short, weed wax is basically a highly concentrated form of marijuana extract, used for vaporizing and dabbing alike.

Marijuana Wax: What is it?

Weed wax is a concentrated extract of marijuana essential oil and takes on a sticky wax-like form. However, although some waxes appear to have a more liquid-like composition, others are hard and flaky. That being said, premium marijuana wax is soft, easy to work with, and whisky in color. Of all the cannabis extracts on the market, wax is ranked alongside the most potent products such as shatter. Although technically, shatter is thought to be number one on the scale of cannabinoid potency. Still, wax is incredibly potent with levels of up to 80 percent THC. In comparison to the percentage of THC found in a standard joint, the difference is significant. As a result of these high THC levels, the intoxication experienced from weed wax is way stronger.

Smoking Weed Wax 101

Marijuana wax is smoked with a device known as a dab rig. It is a form of water pipe that is also referred to as an oil rig. In order to smoke weed wax, a small blob of wax is scooped with a metal tool known as a dab wand. A dollop of wax is transferred via the dab wand onto a hot plate, also referred to as a “nail.” The hot plate is not literally a nail, that is simply what it is called within the dabbing community. A dab nail is generally made from heat-proof titanium, ceramic, or quartz, and it is used instead of the bowl that is used to smoke dried bud.
Marijuana wax and other concentrated extracts need significantly higher temperatures to combust than weed flowers. For this reason, the dab nail is usually heated with a mini blow torch that resembles the type of tool chefs use to make crème Brulee. After the dab nail has heated to sufficiently high temperatures, the wax is literally dabbed onto the surface of the nail. At the same time, the weed lover will inhale through the water pipe as the superior taste tantalizes the senses. When vaping wax, the marijuana concentrate should only be heated to a maximum of 445 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is the heat where combustion occurs in cannabis products.

Smoking Marijuana Wax with a Dab Rig

An oil or dab rig guarantees near-instant intoxication, in the same way that a shot supersedes your average glass of wine. The effects set in quickly and powerfully, courtesy of the high levels of THC in marijuana wax. Unfortunately, due to the strength of the concentrate, this can heighten chances of experiencing paranoid thoughts – paired with the notorious racing heart. However, most seasoned smokers love a good dab rig and enjoy the relaxing euphoria that dab rigs are famous for.

Smoking Marijuana Wax with a Bong

Bongs are among the most popular methods of smoking marijuana concentrate, so long as the smoker adheres to the three golden rules:

  1. Use a mini blow torch to light the bong
  2. Use some form of screen so that the wax doesn’t get into the bong
  3. Combine the wax with dry bud to enhance flavor and so that it doesn’t stick to the bong

If you stick to these recommendations, you can smoke wax in a bong with no problem. Simply light up and inhale deeply while burning the wax with the torch.

Smoking Marijuana Wax with a Vaporizer

It’s just as easy to vape wax as it is to vape a bud or other forms of concentrate. To succeed, it is necessary to heat the wax more than one would for dry bud. Use the dab nail to scoop a tiny dollop of wax into the vape, allow it to heat, and prepare to have your mind blown!
The only thing to keep in mind when vaping wax, or any form of concentrate, is that it’s important to use a high-quality vaping device. Vapes are useful for all kinds of situations, and our collection offers endless possibilities. Take a look at our handpicked selection here, and get your own today!

Weed Wax: How it is Made

Weed wax falls into the category of BHOs, also known as butane hash oil products. BHO is an extraction method that makes use of the solvent “butane.” Back in the day, before state-of-the-art extraction methods had been developed, questionable DIY waxes were made using butane. The technique involved blowing butane through a pipe packed with bud. Needless to say, that is not a smart plan. Butane is a solvent, which means it is highly flammable and full of chemicals! That being said, it needs to be dealt with in a regulated, ventilated lab-like environment. There are many dangerous chemicals at play, and these need to be handled by professionals and disposed of in a certain way. The worst that can happen is a literal explosion (and death) so it is worth taking every precaution.
Technological advances within the industry have to lead to the cannabis scene as we know it today – with the large-scale extraction of concentrated cannabis waxes and oils. Now, weed wax is made by compressing cannabis flowers into tubes that are sprayed with butane gas. This serves to separate undesirable plant components from the marijuana resin. Once this first extraction is complete, any extra butane needs to evaporate from the concentrate. This is achieved by spreading the concentrate onto a flat surface (such as a baking sheet) and then placing this into a vacuum oven at a low-ish temperature. The final result that you are looking for, is a sticky and opaque marijuana concentrate. But the wait is not over yet! Before you can smoke the weed wax, you must first allow it to cool and harden.

Shatter and Wax: What’s the Difference?

Shatter and marijuana wax are among the two most popular subgenres of BHO. While wax appears cloudy and sticky in consistency, shatter is hard and slightly transparent. But asides from the aesthetics, we are going to have to dive into the world of science to understand the real difference between these substances. At a basic level, weed wax and shatter may seem to be the same substance. However, although both are made with butane and each is processed in a similar way, there are subtle differences. The key point though is that the slightly different processing methods result in vastly different products (at a chemical level).

Marijuana Wax: Where to Buy It

It’s too risky to try making DIY wax at home, so where do you go to get it from? Well, the answer is simply a dispensary. Alternatively, some patients may qualify for home delivery or mail order wax. Of course, this varies from province to province. Depending on the regulations of specific regions, some may have no choice but to purchase wax on the black market. This is a low-key sketchy scenario, and it is not recommended to buy “street wax”. Dispensaries are the safer option, with most legitimate cannabis companies providing transparent third-party testing. This ensures that chemicals have been sufficiently removed from the concentrate. The process is known as ‘purging’ and it draws out any extra butane.
Concentrates such as cannabis wax are among the most powerful of all marijuana-based products. As a result, they tend to be in the pricier range of the spectrum. Luckily for the millions in provinces where cannabis is legal, it is common for dispensaries to have sales, and wax is often on special. Focus on local and you might get lucky! More importantly, do your homework and find out what the companies are really about first. And finally, remember not to overdo it with the wax – have fun responsibly!
